Biography
Dr. Afonso is a professor of Internal Medicine, in the Division of Cardiology. Dr. Afonso received his medical degree from Goa Medical College in Bombay, India. He subsequently completed his Internal Medicine Residency and Fellowship training in Cardiovascular Diseases at Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center in 2000. He has trained numerous Fellows over the years in his capacity as Director of the Adult Cardiovascular Fellowship Program since 2002. He is extensively published and has authored over 180 peer-reviewed publications. Aside from being a reviewer for numerous Cardiology journals, he continues to serve the American College of Cardiology in various capacities. He recently completed a 4-year term of service as a member of American College of Cardiology Foundation Task Force on Expert Consensus Decision Pathways. Dr. Afonso is the current President of the Michigan Society of Echocardiography and the Section Chief of Cardiology at the Karmanos Cancer Center, Detroit Medical Center.

Research
Dr Afonso is extensively published. His research has centered around preventive cardiology including novel markers of cardiovascular risk including homocysteine, red cell distribution width, microalbuminuria and cystatin-C, application of a multi biomarker approach to risk stratification and reclassification. Other research interests have been in the realm of echocardiography particularly strain imaging applications. Recent contributions include describing a novel spectral Doppler-based index for quantification of mitral regurgitation and Doppler notching for the detection of high-risk pulmonary embolism.
