Biography

Dr. Afonso received his medical degree from Goa Medical College in Bombay, India (1980-1984), which is also where he began his internship and residency (1986-1993). His residency was subsequently completed in Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center (1993-1996). He then went through a Geriatric Fellowship training (1996-1997), and a fellowship in Cardiovascular Diseases (1997-2000) at Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center.

Research

Recent research focus has centered around novel markers of cardiovascular risk including homocysteine, red cell distribution width, microalbuminuria and cystatin-C, application of a multi biomarker approach to risk stratification and reclassification. Other research interests have been in the realm of novel echo modalities including 3D and strain imaging and their applications. Our laboratory has recently been involved with developing a novel spectral Doppler-based index for quantification of mitral regurgitation.
